Notes on timber pavilions
How a small summer pavilion in Aveiro became our laboratory for joinery, shade and prefabrication.
Pavilhão Sal was meant to be a simple shade structure for a summer market. It became one of the most instructive projects we have ever built.
Every joint visible
With no cladding to hide behind, every connection had to be both structural and beautiful. We tested each joint at full scale in the workshop before a single beam arrived on site.
Prefabricated, not provisional
The pavilion was assembled in nine days and can be taken apart just as quickly. Temporary buildings, we learned, deserve the same care as permanent ones — perhaps more.
