A prefabricated timber shade structure for a summer market, assembled in nine days.
Pavilhão Sal began as a request for simple shade over a summer salt market. It became a study in joinery, prefabrication and the beauty of structure left exposed.
Every joint visible
More than four hundred timber members were cut in the workshop and assembled on site in nine days. With no cladding to hide behind, every connection had to be both structural and elegant.
Designed to move
Every joint can be undone with hand tools. When the market season ends, the pavilion can be packed onto two trucks and rebuilt elsewhere — it has already travelled once.
(The brief)
The city needed shade for a seasonal salt market — cheap, quick to build and easy to move, yet worthy of its place on the waterfront.
(Our response)
A kit of 412 prefabricated timber members, cut and test-assembled in our workshop, then raised on site in nine days by a team of six carpenters.

A quiet palette.
On time, on budget and still poetic. The pavilion became the heart of the market within a week of opening.
